Vinicius Jr and Raphinha lead Brazil’s squad as Neymar misses out for World Cup qualifiers
SAO PAULO: Brazilian forwards Vinicius Jr and Raphinha will spearhead Brazil’s attack for this month’s crucial World Cup qualifiers, with Neymar absent from the squad announced by coach Dorival Jr on Friday. Neymar, Brazil’s all-time top scorer, is sidelined as he continues to recover from a serious knee injury, sustained during Al-Hilal’s recent 5-4 victory over Al-Ain in the Asian Champions League.
Raphinha has been in outstanding form for Barcelona this season, delivering consistent performances and recently impressing with a goal in Barcelona’s 4-0 El Clasico win over Real Madrid, followed by a Champions League hat-trick against Bayern Munich. The winger’s form has seen him emerge as a pivotal part of Dorival Jr’s plans as Brazil seek to secure World Cup qualification.
Vinicius Jr, meanwhile, returns to international duty after missing October’s qualifiers with a neck injury. His Real Madrid teammate Endrick, however, did not make the squad this time around. Brazil, currently fourth in the South American standings with 16 points, trail leaders Argentina by six points and face a challenging two-match series against Venezuela on November 14 and Uruguay five days later.
“We are progressing, but there’s still work to do,” Dorival stated, reflecting on Brazil’s campaign. The upcoming games will be pivotal as Brazil aim to close the gap with Argentina and strengthen their qualification hopes.
