Vazquez bids farewell to Real Madrid after 23 trophies

Real Madrid confirmed on Wednesday that defender Lucas Vazquez will depart the club after his contract expired.

The 34-year-old signed a short-term extension to feature in this summer’s Club World Cup in the United States.

“Vazquez exemplarily represents the values of Real Madrid, which has made him one of the most beloved players by our fans,” president Florentino Perez said.

Originally a winger, Vazquez won 23 major trophies at the Bernabeu, including five Champions Leagues and four La Liga titles.

“I leave Real Madrid but Real Madrid will never leave me,” he said in a farewell video.

A Madrid academy graduate, Vazquez played 402 matches for Los Blancos, apart from a season-long loan at Espanyol.
