Van Dijk expects “big summer” at Liverpool as new contract nears
Virgil van Dijk says Liverpool are preparing for a pivotal summer in the transfer market as he prepares to extend his stay at Anfield.
The Dutch defender, who scored the winner in Sunday’s 2-1 victory over West Ham United, is reportedly close to signing a new two-year contract that will keep him at the club alongside fellow senior figure Mohamed Salah. The result left Liverpool 13 points clear of Arsenal with six games remaining, putting Arne Slot’s side within reach of a record-equalling 20th English league title.
Van Dijk, who captained the side for the 100th time in the Premier League, believes a crucial off-season awaits.
“I think Liverpool should be able to challenge for titles in the upcoming years,” said Van Dijk. “Whatever happens in terms of players going out, players coming in, I think it should be a big summer. I think they’re planning to make it a big summer, so we all have to trust the board to do the right job.”
The 33-year-old also underlined the value of this year’s summer preparation, with no major international tournaments scheduled.
“This year, there is a training camp and there is time for the team to work on what the manager wants, and I think that will then improve the team,” he said. “A proper pre-season would definitely help the club to be even more consistent.”
Reflecting on his bond with the club, Van Dijk added: “Being successful with Liverpool, the culture of the club — that is just part of me. I love the club, that’s pretty obvious.”
