Spain rescue late draw against 10-man Netherlands in Nations League thriller

ROTTERDAM, Netherland: Spain snatched a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to secure a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in their UEFA Nations League quarter-final first leg on Thursday, extending their unbeaten run in competitive matches to 22 games.

Mikel Merino, usually deployed as a midfielder but occasionally used as a striker for Arsenal, showcased his finishing ability with a composed close-range goal in the 93rd minute, salvaging a crucial result for the defending champions.

Spain had taken an early lead when Nico Williams fired home in the ninth minute after a slick move initiated by 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, whose clever pass to Pedri set up the Athletic Bilbao winger. However, the Dutch responded strongly, with Cody Gakpo equalising before halftime and Tijjani Reijnders putting them ahead in the second half.

The hosts’ momentum was halted when 19-year-old Jorrel Hato was shown a straight red card in the 82nd minute for a reckless challenge. Spain capitalised on the numerical advantage, with Merino’s late strike ensuring they take the upper hand into the return leg.

With their unbeaten streak intact, Spain will now look to finish the job at home and book a spot in the semi-finals.
