River Plate edge Boca Juniors in intense Superclasico battle

BUENOS AIRES: River Plate claimed a thrilling 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Boca Juniors in a fiercely contested ‘Superclasico’ on Sunday, in Argentina’s Primera Division Apertura competition. A record crowd of more than 85,000 fans packed the recently expanded Mas Monumental stadium, creating an electric atmosphere following a minute’s silence for Pope Francis, who passed away last week.

Teen sensation Franco Mastantuono gave River the lead in the 25th minute with a moment of brilliance, curling a stunning left-footed free-kick into the top corner from nearly 30 metres out.

“A derby is lived with a lot of adrenaline, but I tried to focus, isolate myself and concentrate and I think that helped,” said the 17-year-old Mastantuono after the match.

River’s relentless pressure almost extended their advantage as Enzo Perez won possession high up the pitch, setting up Sebastian Driussi for a powerful effort that was well saved by Agustin Marchesin. The Boca goalkeeper produced another superb stop moments later, denying German Pezzella’s header from a corner.

Despite a late push from Boca Juniors, River held on to secure the win and claim bragging rights in one of world football’s most iconic rivalries.
