Raphinha’s stoppage-time strike secures Barcelona’s thrilling comeback win

LISBON: Barcelona sealed their place in the Champions League last 16 in dramatic fashion, with Raphinha’s stoppage-time goal completing a sensational 5-4 comeback victory over Benfica on Tuesday. The Catalan side overcame a shaky start and a two-goal deficit, fueled by a first-half hat-trick from Benfica’s Vangelis Pavlidis.

Barcelona, struggling in recent LaLiga matches, initially mirrored their domestic form at Estadio da Luz. Questions were raised over coach Hansi Flick’s decision to start goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, whose errors contributed to Benfica’s early dominance. Pavlidis capitalized on these opportunities, giving the hosts a commanding lead at halftime.

However, Barcelona regrouped in the second half. A spirited fightback saw them claw their way back into contention, culminating in Raphinha’s decisive goal deep into stoppage time. The win leaves Barcelona second in the group with 18 points after seven games, securing their spot in the knockout stages ahead of the final phase fixtures.

Benfica, on the other hand, missed a crucial opportunity to edge closer to automatic qualification for the last 16. The Portuguese side remains in 18th place with 10 points, now relying on the playoffs to advance.

Speaking to Movistar, Raphinha acknowledged the challenge: “We knew it was going to be a difficult game. I know how hard it is to play here against Benfica. They have players of the highest level.”
