Qatar lose 4-1 to Russia in friendly ahead of World Cup qualifiers

Qatar’s national team suffered a 4-1 defeat to Russia in a friendly match played at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium, as part of Al Annabi’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup qualification playoff.
Russia dominated the first half, taking a 3-0 lead. Qatar defender Mahdi Ali opened the scoring with an own goal in the 33rd minute, before Matvey Kislyak doubled the advantage with an unmarked header two minutes later. Ivan Sergeev then made it three on the stroke of halftime, slotting home a rebound after the Qatari goalkeeper’s initial save.
In the second half, Julen Lopetegui’s side improved following several substitutions. Akram Afif came close with a header in the 57th minute, denied by the Russian goalkeeper, before reducing the deficit five minutes later, finishing off a cross from Mohamed Mannai in the 62nd minute.
However, Russia restored their three-goal cushion in the 69th minute, when Alexey Miranchuk broke through the Qatari defence and fired home to complete the 4-1 victory.
