Qatar held to goalless draw by Oman in World Cup qualifier playoff opener

Qatar’s national team was held to a goalless draw by Oman in their opening match of the fourth and final Asian playoff stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The game was played at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium and belonged to Group A, which also includes the United Arab Emirates

Qatar controlled proceedings early on, asserting clear dominance through high pressing and continuous attacking pressure.

The first chance came when Boualem Khoukhi’s direct free-kick went narrowly wide in the 13th minute. Al Annabi continued to push forward, with Edmilson Junior delivering a cross that was collected by the Omani goalkeeper in the 19th minute.

Oman’s first real threat came in the 28th minute when Issam Al Subhi broke into the box, but his shot was saved by goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada.

Oman had another opportunity in the 42nd minute when Al Subhi headed a cross over the bar, and the first half ended goalless.

In the second half, Qatar maintained intense pressure, and Akram Afif came close to breaking the deadlock after dribbling past several defenders, only to send his shot inches wide in the 49th minute.

Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui made several substitutions to boost the attack, but Qatar couldn’t convert their chances, and the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
