PSG beat Aston Villa to retain UEFA Super Cup

SALZBURG: Paris St Germain retained the UEFA Super Cup with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on Wednesday, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue scoring for the Champions League winners.

PSG took the lead in the 20th minute when Kvaratskhelia produced a superb individual effort, cutting through the Villa defence before firing an unstoppable shot past goalkeeper Marco Bizot.

Villa responded just before halftime through Brian Madjo, who marked his debut with a volley after John McGinn delivered a ball into the six-yard box.

The 17-year-old Madjo became the youngest player to score in the UEFA Super Cup with his equaliser.

PSG restored their advantage in the 61st minute when Doue found the net to put the French side back in front. Villa were unable to produce another equaliser as PSG secured another trophy.

“We are always hungry, we want more,” Doue told TNT Sports. “We have ambitions, we’re a young team, and we want to win everything again this season.”

PSG coach Luis Enrique fielded nine players who started the Champions League final despite several members of his squad only recently returning from the World Cup.

Europa League winners Villa created opportunities but could not find a second goal, while PSG held on to add the Super Cup to their growing collection of silverware.
