Newcastle end 70-year trophy drought with League Cup win over Liverpool

LONDON: Newcastle United ended their long wait for a domestic trophy, defeating holders Liverpool 2-1 to claim the League Cup at Wembley on Sunday. Goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak secured a historic victory, sparking wild celebrations among the Geordie faithful.
Local hero Burn set Newcastle on course with a powerful header in the 45th minute, capping a dominant first-half display. The Magpies extended their lead seven minutes after the break when Swedish forward Isak calmly slotted past Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
Liverpool, who are runaway Premier League leaders, managed to pull one back in stoppage time through substitute Federico Chiesa, but it was too late to deny Newcastle a famous win. The result secured Eddie Howe’s side their first domestic silverware since 1955.
For Burn, the moment was extra special. A Newcastle youth product, his journey back to St. James’ Park took him through clubs like Fulham, Birmingham City, and Brighton before returning in 2022. His manager, Eddie Howe, hailed him as “colossal” after a dream week in which Burn also received his first England call-up.
“I don’t want to go to sleep because I feel like I’m dreaming,” Burn said after his first goal of the season helped Newcastle to a historic triumph.(Reuters)
