Modric confirms Real Madrid farewell after Club World Cup
Luka Modric has announced he will leave Real Madrid following this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, bringing an end to a legendary 12-year spell at the Spanish giants.
The 39-year-old Croatian midfielder confirmed his departure in an emotional Instagram post on Thursday, saying: “Everything in life has a start and an end… on Saturday I will play my last match at the Santiago Bernabeu. I’m leaving with a full heart, filled with pride, gratitude and unforgettable memories.”
Modric, who joined Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, made 590 appearances for the club, winning six UEFA Champions League titles, four La Liga crowns and 28 trophies in total. He became club captain last summer and remains one of Real Madrid’s most decorated players.
“Even though, after the Club World Cup, I’m no longer going to wear this shirt on the pitch, I will always be a Madrid fan,” he added.
Real Madrid confirmed the news in a statement, calling Modric “one of the biggest legends at our club and in world football.”
President Florentino Perez said, “Modric will always stay in the hearts of all Madrid fans as a unique and exemplary footballer, who has always represented Madrid’s values.”
