Michail Antonio undergoes surgery after serious car accident

West Ham forward Michail Antonio is recovering in hospital after undergoing surgery for a lower limb fracture sustained in a serious car accident on Saturday. The 34-year-old was transferred to a central London hospital, where he remains under observation.

“West Ham United can confirm Michail Antonio has undergone surgery on a lower limb fracture following a road traffic accident on Saturday afternoon,” the club announced on Sunday.

Antonio was conscious and communicating after the incident, according to updates from the club. The accident involved a heavily damaged Ferrari, with unverified images of the scene circulating online. Essex Fire Service confirmed firefighters were required to free a man trapped in the vehicle.

Premier League clubs and players have since expressed their support for the London-born Jamaica international. West Ham thanked the football community for their overwhelming support and extended gratitude to the emergency services and medical staff involved in Antonio’s care.

Antonio, who joined West Ham in 2015, has scored 83 goals in 323 appearances and was instrumental in their 2023 Europa Conference League triumph. Despite scoring just once in 15 matches this season, he remains a key figure for the Hammers.

The club wished him a speedy recovery, with no timeline yet provided for his return.
