Mexico edge U.S. 2-1 to clinch 10th Gold Cup title in thrilling final

HOUSTON, Texas: Mexico defeated the United States 2-1 at NRG Stadium in Houston on Sunday to successfully defend their CONCACAF Gold Cup crown, capturing a record-extending 10th title in a pulsating final filled with drama and emotion.
The Americans made a dream start, taking the lead just four minutes in when Sebastian Berhalter’s pinpoint free-kick found Chris Richards, whose thunderous header bounced in off the underside of the crossbar.
But Mexico hit back in the 27th minute through veteran striker Raul Jimenez, who tapped in from close range and paid tribute to his late former Wolves teammate Diogo Jota by revealing a Mexico shirt bearing Jota’s name. “We came from behind and are leaving with the title,” Jimenez said. “It’s something we’ve been trying to do since the tournament began.”
Despite dominating the first half, Mexico squandered several key chances, with Roberto Alvarado and teenager Gilberto Mora both denied by U.S. keeper Matt Freese. The Americans came close to regaining the lead before halftime through Alex Freeman, but his header struck Mexican keeper Luis Malagón in the face and Diego Luna fired the rebound over.
The decisive moment came in the second half when Edson Álvarez powered in a header off a corner. After a tense VAR check for offside, the goal stood, sparking wild celebrations among the Mexican fans.
With the win, Mexico not only retained their title but sent a strong message ahead of next summer’s FIFA World Cup.
