Mbappe trains in mask, eyes return for France against Netherlands

France’s star striker Kylian Mbappe is inching closer to a return after a broken nose, with coach Didier Deschamps expressing optimism about his availability for Friday’s crucial Euro 2024 clash against the Netherlands.

“Recovery is progressing well,” Deschamps told reporters in Leipzig. “Despite a heavy collision, Mbappe participated in training drills yesterday and will do so again this evening. We’re hopeful to have him available tomorrow.”

Boosting those hopes further, Mbappe was spotted training in a protective mask designed in France’s national colors. The injury occurred in a collision with Austria’s Kevin Danso during their opening match victory.

While training separately on Wednesday with a nose cast, Mbappe didn’t appear significantly affected. The French Football Federation has confirmed no surgery is needed, with just a mask separating Mbappe from a return.

Teammate Antoine Griezmann echoed the positive sentiment: “Kylian’s doing great. The swelling has reduced. We’ll wait until the last minute to determine his status.”
