Mbappe scores twice as Modric and Ancelotti bid farewell to Bernabeu

Kylian Mbappe all but sealed the European Golden Shoe with a brace as Real Madrid defeated Real Sociedad 2–0 on Saturday, in an emotional farewell to Carlo Ancelotti and Luka Modric at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ancelotti, who is departing to take charge of Brazil, received a warm send-off from fans after winning 15 trophies across two spells in Madrid.

“It has been an honour and a pleasure to coach this club, this team,” Ancelotti said. “I love you very much.”

Modric, who will feature at the Club World Cup but played his final home game, received a guard of honour and addressed the crowd post-match.

“The moment I never wanted to come has arrived,” Modric said. “I have won many trophies, but the biggest one is the love and affection you have given me… Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

Mbappe, now six goals clear of Robert Lewandowski in the La Liga scoring charts, opened the scoring after tapping in the rebound from a saved penalty. He added his second late on from a Vinicius Junior assist.

Unai Marrero had earlier denied Mbappe and kept Sociedad in the contest, while Madrid keeper Andriy Lunin saved well from Sergio Gomez.

Lucas Vazquez, potentially making his final appearance for the club, was also applauded as he exited.

Madrid finish second behind Barcelona, who completed a domestic treble. Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah would need four goals against Crystal Palace on Sunday to deny Mbappe the Golden Shoe.
