Mbappe rescues Real Madrid in 1-1 derby draw against Atletico

MADRID: Real Madrid secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw against city rivals Atletico Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, keeping their position atop the LaLiga standings. Kylian Mbappe’s second-half strike canceled out Julian Alvarez’s opener, preserving Real’s narrow lead at the top with 50 points, just one ahead of Atletico.

Atletico dominated the first half and took the lead in the 35th minute when Alvarez converted a penalty after Aurelien Tchouameni’s foul on Samuel Lino. Real Madrid, however, responded strongly after the break. Mbappe netted the equalizer in the 50th minute, finishing a rebound to bring the hosts level.

Despite Real’s relentless pressure, Atletico’s goalkeeper Jan Oblak delivered a masterclass performance, making several stunning saves to deny the hosts a winning goal.

The result keeps Atletico in second place with 49 points, while Barcelona, third with 45 points, have a chance to close the gap when they visit Sevilla on Sunday.
