Manchester United sign Brazil striker Matheus Cunha from Wolves in reported £62.5m deal

Manchester United have signed Brazil forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers in a deal reportedly worth £62.5 million ($83 million), the club confirmed on Sunday.
Cunha, 26, is set to sign a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option of a further 12 months. The move, subject to visa and registration formalities, marks manager Ruben Amorim’s first signing of the summer.
“Manchester United has reached agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha,” read a club statement. “Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford.”
Cunha scored 18 goals in all competitions for Wolves this season and was named the club’s player of the year. He leaves Molineux with 33 goals in 92 appearances following his January 2023 arrival from Atletico Madrid.
United triggered the release clause in Cunha’s contract, with Wolves confirming it was a club-record fee received.
Cunha will now join the Brazil squad for Friday’s World Cup qualifier against Ecuador, Carlo Ancelotti’s first match in charge of the Selecao.
Cunha bolsters a United attack that struggled for consistency, particularly during their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo is also reportedly on United’s radar.
Manager Amorim acknowledged the club’s limited financial flexibility: “It’s not going to change so much because we have the fair play financial rules. We are not allowed to do much in this summer… so we are prepared for that.”
He added, “Our big plan is to improve the team that we have, and our academy, because I think that is the future.”
