Man City back to winning ways as Forest rise to second in Premier League
Struggling Manchester City secured a much-needed 2-0 victory over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Sunday, ending a dire run of form with just their second win in 14 matches. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest climbed to second in the Premier League table after defeating Everton 2-0, whereas Tottenham were denied victory by a late Wolves equaliser at Molineux.
City, defending champions, entered the match on the back of nine defeats in their last 13 outings. However, goals from Savinho and Erling Haaland lifted Pep Guardiola’s side to fifth, 11 points behind leaders Liverpool, who have two games in hand. Savinho struck his first goal for the club in the first half before Haaland sealed the win with a 74th-minute header.
“We needed it, all of us,” Guardiola told Sky Sports. “It was not the ideal performance, but hopefully the victories will give our mood a better position.”
Leicester, now entrenched in the bottom three after four straight losses under new boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, came close through Facundo Buonanotte and Jamie Vardy but lacked finishing.
Elsewhere, Nuno Espirito Santo’s high-flying Forest extended their winning streak to five matches, overcoming Everton with goals from Chris Wood and Morgan Gibbs-White. Wood described the team’s European ambitions as a “dream.”
Ange Postecoglou and his Tottenham side are still struggling to get back on track and this time, they were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw away at Wolves.
Hwang Hee-chan put the hosts ahead early with a composed finish, but their lead lasted just five minutes before Rodrigo Bentancur headed in the equaliser for Spurs. Brennan Johnson then fired the visitors into the lead late in the first half, seemingly setting Tottenham on course for only their second Premier League win since November.
However, Wolves had the final say, as Jorgen Strand Larssen scored in the dying moments to deny Spurs all three points.
In other results, Crystal Palace edged Southampton 2-1, and Bournemouth earned a late 2-2 draw at Fulham.
