Liverpool edge Girona to maintain perfect Champions League record

Liverpool secured a hard-fought 1-0 away victory over Girona, to continue a flawless Champions League group stage campaign with six wins from six matches so far. Despite dominating possession in the first half, the Reds struggled to break down a resilient Girona side and needed a second-half penalty from Mohamed Salah to claim all three points.

The game began with Liverpool on the front foot, controlling 67% of the ball in the opening 30 minutes. However, Girona posed the greater attacking threat, and Liverpool keeper Alisson was kept busy in goal, making key saves to deny Alejandro Frances, Bryan Gil, and Yaser Asprilla. At the other end, Darwin Núñez came closest for the hosts, his effort thwarted by Paulo Gazzaniga’s outstretched legs.

After a goalless first half, Liverpool turned things around and found their groove. Eventually, Arne Slot’s side got their breakthrough in the 63rd minute. A VAR review led to the referee awarding a penalty following a challenge on Luis Díaz by Donny van de Beek. Salah coolly converted, sending Gazzaniga the wrong way.

Girona tried to find an equalizer late on, but Liverpool’s improved second-half performance saw them establish their control on the game and limit the hosts’ chances. The result ensures Liverpool will stay on top of the table, extending their impressive European form under Slot.
