Liverpool agree British record deal to sign Florian Wirtz from Leverkusen
Liverpool have reportedly agreed a club-record transfer worth up to £116 million ($157 million) to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, in a deal that could become the most expensive in British football history.
Multiple outlets confirmed on Friday that the Premier League champions will pay an initial £100 million for the 22-year-old Germany international, with performance-related add-ons potentially pushing the fee beyond Chelsea’s £115 million outlay for Moises Caicedo in 2023.
Wirtz played a central role in Leverkusen’s unbeaten domestic double-winning campaign in 2023-24, scoring 18 goals and providing 20 assists across all competitions, after which he was named Bundesliga Player of the Year, having helped the club to their first-ever league title.
Former Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, now manager of Real Madrid, called Wirtz “one of the best in the world.”
The creative midfielder joins Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong at Anfield, as Arne Slot reshapes his squad after delivering Liverpool’s record-equalling 20th English league title.
