Kanno’s extra-time header sends Saudi Arabia into Arab Cup semi-finals

DOHA: Mohamed Kanno delivered a dramatic extra-time winner as Saudi Arabia edged Palestine to secure their place in the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 semi-finals. The Green Falcons prevailed 2-1 after a tense, hard-fought contest that showcased discipline, determination, and late heroics.

Saudi Arabia dominated much of the first half, with Hervé Renard’s side patiently probing for openings. Despite the pressure, Palestine displayed the same defensive resilience that earned them two clean sheets in the group stage. Their back line remained intact until the closing moments of the half, when a deep Saudi cross caused rare disarray and forced defender Hamed Hamdan into a decisive clearance to deny Feras Al Brikan.

The breakthrough finally arrived courtesy of Saudi talisman Salem Al Dawsari. A sublime first touch from the No.10 drew a rash challenge from Mohammed Saleh, earning a penalty. Al Brikan stepped up and clinically converted to give Saudi Arabia a deserved lead.

Palestine responded impressively. Oday Dabbagh produced a moment of brilliance, cushioning Hassan Altambakti’s cross with a superb first touch before firing in the equaliser to stun the Saudis.

A late Saudi penalty appeal was dismissed by VAR, sending the match into extra time. With penalties looming, Al Dawsari delivered once again, floating in a precise cross that Kanno powered into the net for the decisive goal.

Saudi Arabia now march into the semi-finals, buoyed by a gritty performance and Kanno’s timely intervention.
