Japan stun Brazil with historic 3-2 comeback win

TOKYO: Japan produced a sensational second-half turnaround to defeat five-time world champions Brazil 3-2 in a thrilling friendly at a packed Tokyo Stadium on Tuesday, clinching their first-ever victory over the South Americans in 14 meetings.
Brazil looked in total control at halftime, leading 2-0 through goals from Paulo Henrique and Gabriel Martinelli. However, the game flipped dramatically after the break as Japan capitalised on a series of defensive mistakes.
Takumi Minamino sparked the comeback in the 52nd minute, pouncing on a poor pass from Fabricio Bruno to halve the deficit. Moments later, Bruno endured more misery when his sliced clearance found the back of his own net, bringing Japan level.
With the momentum firmly with the hosts, Ayase Ueda completed the stunning turnaround in the 71st minute, rising above Lucas Beraldo to head home Junya Ito’s precise corner and send the home crowd into raptures.
Brazil captain Casemiro lamented his side’s collapse, calling it “a blackout from everyone” and warning his teammates about complacency ahead of the World Cup.
The remarkable victory was Japan’s first in 14 meetings with Brazil, breaking a long streak of 11 defeats and two draws against the football giants.
