Iniesta retires at 40, ending a legendary career

Andres Iniesta, the man who delivered Spain their first World Cup with his 2010 winning goal, officially retired from football at age 40 on Tuesday. The Spanish midfielder, known for his grace and creativity, spent most of his career at FC Barcelona, where he helped the club to unprecedented success.

A product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, Iniesta made his debut for the first team in 2002, and over 16 seasons, he won four Champions League titles, nine La Liga crowns, and six Copas del Rey, among 32 trophies. His partnership with Xavi Hernandez and Sergio Busquets, along with his connection with Lionel Messi, created one of the most dominant midfields in football history.

Iniesta’s career was also marked by his unforgettable international contributions. He was a key figure in Spain’s golden era, helping La Roja win two European Championships alongside their 2010 World Cup triumph. His decisive goal in extra time against the Netherlands in the World Cup final remains iconic.

After leaving Barcelona in 2018, Iniesta spent time in Japan with Vissel Kobe and concluded his career in the UAE. Known for his humility and elegance, Iniesta leaves a lasting legacy in football as one of Spain’s finest players.
