Hungary’s Varga to undergo suergery for facial fractures after gruesome clash
Hungary striker Barnabas Varga faces surgery after sustaining multiple facial fractures in a mid-air collision during their hard-fought 1-0 victory over Scotland at Euro 2024.
The incident occurred in Stuttgart on Sunday when Varga collided with Scotland’s goalkeeper Angus Gunn while contesting a high ball in the second half. The impact left Varga visibly distressed, prompting his teammates to urgently call for medical attention.
Following lengthy on-field treatment, Varga was stretchered off the pitch with a sheet held for privacy. The Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) confirmed the severity of the injury early Monday, stating Varga suffered “multiple broken bones” in his face along with a concussion. Surgery is expected, and the 29-year-old will remain hospitalized overnight.
Despite the win secured by Kevin Csoboth’s dramatic stoppage-time goal, Hungary’s celebrations were dampened by Varga’s absence. Regardless of Hungary’s progress in the tournament, Varga will play no further part.
