Germany thrash Scotland in Euro 2024 opener

Germany kicked off their Euro 2024 campaign with a dominant 5-1 victory over Scotland at the Munich Football Arena on Friday. The home side took control early, with Florian Wirtz capitalizing on a goalkeeping error in the 10th minute.

Jamal Musiala then smashed in the second goal after being set up by Kai Havertz in the 19th minute.

Scotland’s hopes for an upset diminished further when Ryan Porteous was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Ilkay Gundogan just before halftime. Havertz converted the resulting penalty to extend Germany’s lead to 3-0.

The second half saw Germany continue to dictate the pace. Substitute Niclas Fuellkrug added a fourth goal late on. Scotland pulled one back through an Antonio Rudiger own goal but Emre Can restored the four-goal advantage for Germany in the dying minutes.

Germany will be looking to maintain their winning momentum when they face Hungary in their next Group A fixture. Scotland, meanwhile, will need to regroup quickly ahead of their clash against Switzerland.
