German FA to enforce captain-only rule for referee interaction across all levels

The German Football Association (DFB) announced on Tuesday that the rule permitting only team captains to speak with referees, introduced at Euro 2024, will be implemented across all levels of German football. Players who approach referees to discuss decisions will now receive yellow cards.

The DFB confirmed that this rule will apply to both men’s and women’s football, spanning from professional leagues to local competitions. The initiative aims to foster greater respect for referees and ensure clearer communication with match officials. UEFA had initially adopted the rule for all its club competitions in early July.

During Euro 2024, several yellow cards were issued to non-captains who approached referees. A staggering 161 yellow cards were distributed during the group stages alone, compared to 151 for the entire Euro 2020 tournament.

Ansgar Schwenken, the Bundesliga’s Director of Match Operations and Fans, endorsed the new regulation. “The rule is the logical step for more fairness and respect,” Schwenken stated.

This move by the DFB signifies a significant shift in how interactions with referees are managed, aiming to promote a more disciplined and respectful environment across all levels of the game in Germany.
