France edge past Guinea as Spain and Japan advance to Olympic quarter-finals

PARIS: On the second matchday of the men’s Olympic soccer tournament, hosts France secured a second consecutive victory with a narrow 1-0 win over Guinea in Bordeaux. Despite their initial 3-0 triumph over the United States, France found Guinea to be a formidable opponent. Guinea had two goals disallowed in the first half before Kiliann Sildillia’s brilliant 75th-minute header broke the deadlock, ensuring France’s passage to the next round.

In Group C, Spain booked their place in the quarter-finals with a solid 3-1 victory over the Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, Argentina bounced back from their opening loss to Morocco, defeating Iraq 3-1 in Group B and climbing to the top of the group on goal difference.

The United States delivered a commanding performance in Group A, scoring three goals in 30 minutes to secure a 4-1 win over New Zealand in Marseille. In Group D, Paraguay staged a dramatic finish by scoring twice in stoppage time to beat Israel 4-2 at Parc des Princes. Japan also sealed their quarter-final spot with a 1-0 win over Mali, who missed a late penalty, adding to their impressive 5-0 victory over Paraguay in their opening match.
