Fernandes fires Manchester United to last-minute victory over Rangers

MANCHESTER: Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes scored a stoppage-time winner to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory over Rangers in the Europa League group stage on Thursday. Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min struck twice in his team’s hard-fought 3-2 win against Hoffenheim in Germany.

United climbed to fourth in the standings with 15 points, edging closer to the knockout stage ahead of the final round of matches. Spurs, with 14 points, sit sixth and remain in contention to advance.

At Old Trafford, United took the lead early in the second half when Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland misjudged a Christian Eriksen corner, resulting in an own goal. The Scottish side equalized in the 88th minute through substitute Cyril Dessers, but Fernandes restored United’s advantage with a clinical finish in added time.

In Hoffenheim, James Maddison opened the scoring for Spurs just three minutes in, and Son doubled the lead as the visitors dominated the first half. Despite a spirited fightback from Hoffenheim, Son’s heroics ensured Tottenham claimed all three points, solidifying their strong position in the group.

With both English clubs on the brink of the knockout phase, the final round promises more excitement.
