Di Maria leaves behind enduring legacy ahead of international farewell

Argentina’s golden era will forever be linked with the genius of Lionel Messi, but Sunday’s Copa America final is a reminder of the key influence of winger Angel Di Maria.

The 36-year-old has announced that the clash with Colombia, where the world champions could secure their third straight major title, will be his last game in Argentina’s iconic light blue and white stripes.

“With all the pain in my soul and feeling a lump in my throat, I say goodbye to the most beautiful thing that has happened to me in my career,” Di Maria said in November when announcing his retirement plans.

Di Maria, like Messi, endured years of frustration before Argentina’s 2021 Copa America triumph in Brazil and the World Cup victory in Qatar. Di Maria has been a crucial figure in Argentina’s success, providing consistent assists and scoring pivotal goals, including the winner in the 2021 Copa America final.

Messi has expressed his desire to win this Copa for Di Maria, nicknamed “El Fideo” due to his slender frame. Di Maria responded emotionally, saying, “I’m not ready for my last game with the national team, but now it’s time. I’ve done everything to be able to leave through the big door.”

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni hopes Di Maria might reconsider his retirement after another emotional night. “I’m in favour of letting Di Maria play… then we’ll see if we can convince him to stay or not,” Scaloni said.

As Argentina prepares for the final at Hard Rock Stadium, Di Maria’s departure will mark the end of an era, but his legacy alongside Messi will endure in Argentine football history.
