Dani Olmo’s spark lifts Barcelona to narrow win over Mallorca
BARCELONA: Barcelona edged Mallorca 1-0 at home on Tuesday, thanks to Dani Olmo’s quickfire strike just seconds into the second half. The win moved Hansi Flick’s side seven points clear of Real Madrid at the top of LaLiga with five games remaining.
Despite resting several starters ahead of Saturday’s Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid, Barcelona dominated possession and chances. Mallorca’s goalkeeper Leo Roman was outstanding, making a string of saves to keep the hosts at bay in the first half.
The breakthrough came shortly after the break when Olmo produced a moment of brilliance in the box, expertly shifting in tight space and firing a sharp left-footed shot into the bottom corner.
With top scorer Robert Lewandowski sidelined due to injury, and key players like Kounde, Raphinha, Cubarsi, and De Jong benched, Barcelona relied on their squad depth. Midfielder Gavi praised the team’s persistence: “We insisted, worked hard, kept going and the goal finally came.”
Mallorca remain seventh on 44 points, clinging to a Europa League qualification spot, while Barca now look to maintain momentum heading into a crucial stretch of their season.
