Crystal Palace beat Liverpool on penalties to win first Community Shield

Crystal Palace claimed their first Community Shield title with a dramatic 3-2 penalty shootout win over Liverpool after a 2-2 draw at Wembley. New Liverpool signings Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong both scored, but Jean-Philippe Mateta’s penalty and an Ismaila Sarr strike pulled Palace level twice.

In the shootout, Mohamed Salah fired over while Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott were denied by Dean Henderson. “We were on the same level as Liverpool and it was a big performance. I’m proud of the team,” said Palace manager Oliver Glasner.

The match was overshadowed by tributes to Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, killed in a car accident in July. Wreaths were laid by Ian Rush and Palace chairman Steve Parish before kick-off, and players wore “Forever 20” emblems.

Justin Devenny scored the decisive penalty, sealing Palace’s latest triumph after their FA Cup victory in May.
