Chile and Peru missed the chance to take a big step toward Copa America quarter-final qualification

TEXAS: In a much-anticipated Group A opener in Arlington, Texas, Chile and Peru played out a dour 0-0 draw on Friday night, missing a key opportunity to secure an early advantage in their quest for Copa America quarter-final qualification. Both teams, each with two Copa America titles to their name, were looking to match defending champions Argentina on three points following their 2-0 victory over Canada. The draw, however, leaves both sides with work to do in their upcoming fixtures.

The stalemate highlighted the ongoing struggles of both nations in the CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying campaign, where they have collectively managed a meager four goals across 12 matches. This lack of offensive firepower was on full display during the match, with clear chances few and far between.

Chile’s Alexis Sanchez had the best opportunity of the night in the 16th minute. The former Inter Milan and Arsenal forward received a low cross from Victor Davila in the six-yard box but astonishingly sent his shot over the crossbar, squandering a golden chance to put his team ahead.

On the defensive end, Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo had a night to remember. The former Barcelona and Manchester City star, at 41 years, 2 months, and 16 days, became the oldest-ever player in Copa America history. His solid performance in goal ensured Chile kept a clean sheet, although the draw was not the result they had hoped for.

Looking ahead, Chile faces a challenging match against group leaders Argentina in New Jersey on Tuesday, while Peru will take on Canada in Kansas City. Both teams will need to find their scoring touch if they are to advance past the group stage and keep their Copa America dreams alive.
