Brazil’s Vinicius Jr set to start against Venezuela in World Cup qualifier

SAO PAULO: Brazil coach Dorival Jr. confirmed that Vinicius Jr. will start in Thursday’s South American World Cup qualifier against Venezuela, stepping in for his Real Madrid teammate Rodrygo, who suffered a muscle injury in LaLiga over the weekend. Vinicius, who missed Brazil’s previous matches against Peru and Chile due to a neck injury, is now set to make his return to the lineup.

The Brazilian squad has faced a series of injury challenges recently. In the same match in which Rodrygo was sidelined, another Real Madrid star, Eder Militao, suffered a serious ACL injury, requiring surgery.

Reflecting on the situation, Dorival Jr. acknowledged the difficulty the team has faced with the frequent injuries. “I think we’ve had some very complicated situations recently. Unfortunately, one injury after another… now with Militao,” he said at a press conference.

Additionally, midfielder Andre and left-back Guilherme Arana are also under medical observation, with their fitness to face Uruguay next week still uncertain. Dorival expressed hope that further assessments after the Venezuela game will offer clarity on potential lineup adjustments.
