Bove fitted with defibrillator after cardiac arrest

Fiorentina midfielder Edoardo Bove has undergone surgery to have a defibrillator implanted following his on-pitch cardiac arrest earlier this month, according to reports from Sky Sport and Gazzetta dello Sport on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old collapsed during Fiorentina’s Serie A match against Inter Milan on December 1, leading to the game being stopped and later abandoned. Bove was rushed to the Careggi hospital in Florence, where initial tests ruled out severe damage to his central nervous and cardio-respiratory systems.

Bove has been under observation in intensive care for over a week and is now reportedly recovering well. He underwent the procedure on Tuesday morning and is expected to be discharged from the hospital in the coming days.

Fiorentina declined to comment on the reports. However, if confirmed, the installation of a defibrillator could jeopardize Bove’s football career in Italy due to the country’s strict medical regulations for athletes.

A similar case occurred with Christian Eriksen, who suffered cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match. After receiving an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), Eriksen was prohibited from playing in Serie A and subsequently left Inter Milan. He now plays for Manchester United and continues to represent Denmark.
