Bayern Munich’s title party on hold as Bayer Leverkusen win again
Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga title celebrations were put on ice after Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-0 win over Augsburg cancelled out Bayern’s 3-0 victory against Mainz on Saturday.
Bayern, needing a win and a Leverkusen slip to secure their 34th title, took care of their part as Leroy Sane, Michael Olise and Eric Dier found the net at the Allianz Arena. But Xabi Alonso’s defending champions refused to surrender, with goals from Patrik Schick and Emi Buendia keeping Leverkusen in the hunt.
Bayern must now defeat RB Leipzig next week to clinch the title but will have to do so without Harry Kane, who will miss the match due to yellow card suspension. The England striker, still chasing his first team trophy, played his part before the setback.
Serge Gnabry created Bayern’s opener for Sane, while Olise doubled the lead with a clever finish before half-time. Dier capped the scoring with a late header, moments after veteran Thomas Mueller came off the bench for his 500th Bundesliga appearance.
In Leverkusen, Florian Wirtz set up Nathan Tella to start a counter-attack that ended with Schick’s deflected opener, before Buendia added a second to seal the win. “We’ve postponed their championship celebrations for another week,” said Robert Andrich.
Elsewhere, Eintracht Frankfurt thrashed 10-man RB Leipzig 4-0 to move closer to Champions League qualification. Borussia Dortmund secured a dramatic 3-2 win at Hoffenheim thanks to a stoppage-time strike from Waldemar Anton, while Freiburg edged 10-man Wolfsburg 1-0. Holstein Kiel kept their survival hopes alive with a thrilling 4-3 win over Borussia Moenchengladbach.
