Atlanta snatches playoff thriller as New York forces game three
Atlanta United pulled off a thrilling 2-1 playoff victory over Inter Miami on Saturday, keeping Lionel Messi’s hopes for an MLS Cup alive but forcing a series-deciding third game. Portuguese winger Xande Silva delivered Atlanta’s winning goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where 68,455 fans witnessed the tense postseason battle.
Miami seemed poised to claim the series after a first-half goal by David Martinez. The Paraguay international capitalized on a botched clearance by Atlanta’s Brad Guzan in the 40th minute, allowing Federico Redondo to feed Martinez for a simple finish.
Atlanta, fighting to stay in the playoffs, turned up the pressure in the second half. Derrick Williams brought them level in the 58th minute with a powerful header, igniting a relentless push from both teams. Saba Lobjanidze nearly scored for Atlanta late in regulation, but Miami’s Drake Callender deflected the attempt onto the crossbar.
Just as the game seemed destined for penalties, Aleksey Miranchuk set up Silva for a brilliant top-corner strike to seal the victory. “Words can’t describe it; they’re such a resilient group,” said Atlanta coach Rob Valentino. Game three will be in Miami next Saturday.
In other playoff action, New York City FC stayed alive with a 3-1 win over FC Cincinnati, forcing a decisive game three.
