Arne Slot leads Liverpool to record-equalling 20th English title with Anfield rout

Arne Slot said he was “incredibly proud” after Liverpool clinched a record-equalling 20th English title with a dominant 5-1 victory over Tottenham at a jubilant Anfield on Sunday.

Slot, in his first season at the helm after succeeding Jurgen Klopp, secured the Premier League crown with four games to spare. The Dutchman has now matched Manchester United’s record for the most English top-flight titles.

Goals from Luis Diaz, Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo, and Mohamed Salah, along with an own goal from Destiny Udogie, sealed Liverpool’s first league triumph since 2020.

Slot admitted it was extra special to win the title in front of the Anfield faithful.

“It is difficult to put into words. The scenes here and before the game tell you more than I can describe,” Slot said. “Five years ago they won the league but the fans weren’t here. You can feel how important it was for them to be here today.”

Despite Tottenham’s early lead through Dominic Solanke, Slot said he always trusted his players to respond.

“They always come back, they always find a way to win,” he added.

“Incredibly proud, not only of the players but the people standing here, sport directors, my staff members, we should give them a big round of applause.”

Slot, 46, is the first Dutchman to win the Premier League and just the fifth manager to lift the trophy in his debut season in England.

Reflecting on Liverpool’s consistency and the foundations left by Klopp, Slot remained modest about his achievement.

“The culture, the work rate, the quality was already outstanding. We started off really well and it maybe helped a bit that City had a difficult spell, which they hadn’t had in five years,” he said.

“When the season started, everyone would have been happy if we finished in the Champions League places. I don’t think that was fair to our players because they are much better than that and that’s what they have showed this season.”

The title caps an extraordinary campaign for Slot’s Liverpool, who ended Manchester City’s four-year grip on the Premier League trophy.
