Doha: Defending champions Al Sadd overcame Al Rayyan 5-4 (1-1) on penalties in the 49th Amir Cup final to retain the title here at the Al Thumama Stadium on Friday evening.
Earlier, the FIFA World Cup venue became the sixth stadium to be completed for the football’s next year’s mega event in Qatar.
Rayyan, took the lead courtesy a spot kick that was neatly converted by Yacine Brahimi in the 45th minute.
But Al Sadd, the most successful club in the tournament history, returned with a renewed vigour after the half time and were rewarded with an equaliser that also came through spot kick.
Spaniard Santi Cazorla converted from the spot with consummate ease to bring back Sadd into the game.
