AC Milan must strike a balance between defence and attack, says Fonseca
MILAN: AC Milan coach Paulo Fonseca has called for his team to find the right balance between defence and attack as they prepare to face Empoli in Serie A this weekend. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Fonseca acknowledged the contrasting weaknesses his side displayed in their last two matches, urging improvement on multiple fronts.
Last week, Milan delivered a disciplined but uninspired performance in a 0-0 draw at home against Juventus, showing defensive solidity but lacking creativity in attack. However, their midweek Champions League clash against Slovan Bratislava highlighted the opposite issue. Despite a 3-2 victory, Milan’s defensive lapses allowed their Slovakian opponents to come close to equalizing after the Italian side had initially taken the lead.
“With Juve, we were more organised; with Slovan, better in transition,” Fonseca explained. “It seems to me that we improve in one area, then other problems arise. It’s not because you win that you close your eyes to the issues.”
Fonseca emphasized the importance of addressing these vulnerabilities to build consistency and resilience, particularly as the team juggles the demands of Serie A and the Champions League.
