Qatar pip Jordan to basketball gold

DOHA: Qatari athletes did well on the penultimate day of the 12th edition of the Doha Arab Games. While the men’s basketball team won

their maiden Games title, shooter Amna Mesaad Al Abdullah clinched double gold in women’s trap event.

Qatar beat Jordan 78-70 in basketball the final and thus exacted revenge for their group stage loss.

Amna shot a score of 86 to emerge as victorious in the individual event. Lebanon’s Ray Bassil (83) and Kuwait’s Shahad Alhawal (80) finished second and third respectively.

The Qatar team, consisting of Amna, Noora Essa Al Ali and Nawal Hassan Al Khalaf bagged gold with an aggregate of 195 while Morocco (188) and Kuwait (185) claimed silver and bronze.

Egypt thrashed Qatar 25-20, 25-20, 25-10 in the men’s volleyball final. Algeria downed Kuwait 25-23, 25-17, 26-24 to end up third.

The Qatar team of Mohammed Al Mudaikhi, Mohammed Al Sayed, Hussein Nezad, Hamad Al Tamimi and Ghanem Al Sulaiti, finished second (359.50pts) in men’s classical chess. Egypt were unbeaten and won the gold with 380.25 while Morocco (334.50) were third.

Qatari cue sports teams won bronze in nine-ball pool and snooker events. Bashar Hussein and Mohammed bin Ali beat the UAE’s Hanni Al Howri and Salahaldeen Al Rimawi 9-7 in nine-ball pool doubles.

Ahmed Saif, Ali Al Obaidly and Mohsen Bukshaisha beat Iraq’s Firas Al Shamini, Ali Abd Mohsin and Abbas Al Saedi 3-1 in the bronze-medal play-off.
