Abdel Said creates history with back-to-back Grand Prix triumph

DOHA: Egyptian-born Belgian rider Abdel Said etched his name in history on Saturday, becoming the first equestrian to win successive Longines Global Champions Tour (LGCT) Grand Prix Doha (1.60m) titles. Competing at the stunning Longines outdoor arena of Al Shaqab, Said and his trusted 12-year-old bay mare, Bonne Amie, delivered a flawless jump-off performance in 38.24 seconds to secure the prestigious trophy and a top prize of €189,750.

Said joins an elite list of multiple LGCT Doha Grand Prix winners, surpassing Swedish legend Rolf-Göran Bengtsson, who previously claimed titles in 2014 and 2016 but not in consecutive years.

Germany’s Daniel Desseur, riding the 14-year-old bay gelding Gangster v/h Noddevelt, finished second with a time of 39.52 seconds, while Saudi Arabia’s Abdulrahman Al-Rajhi secured third place on his 12-year-old bay gelding, Ventago, clocking 40.35 seconds.

HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee and Chairman of Al Shaqab, presented the awards to the top riders.

Reflecting on his historic victory, the 35-year-old Said expressed his delight, saying, “I am super happy with Bonne Amie. When I went out for the jump-off, I knew it would be tough, but she used the strides well. She has come a long way, and I am so happy.”

Said also offered advice to young riders, emphasizing patience in developing strong bonds with their horses. “I have been jumping with Bonne Amie since she was nine years old. That’s how long it takes to combine well with your horse. So, young riders should be patient for the best results to come.”

Runner-up Desseur highlighted the growing competition outside Europe, stating, “European riders should now know that the competition is heating up and that the standards here are the same as in Europe.”

Al-Rajhi, meanwhile, playfully warned Said about future battles, saying, “Me being on the podium is a clear message to Abdel. Be careful, I am coming.” He also lauded Qatar’s efforts in elevating the sport, adding, “The course is tough, and with so many top riders and quality horses, the sport in Doha is reaching the highest level.”(Gulf Times)
