UCI presidency limited to three terms

THE international cycling union (UCI) congress restricted its presidency to three terms (four years each) in office, instead of the present four, at the governing body meeting held on the sidelines of the UCI Road World Championships in Doha last week.

The congress also ensured broader representation of continental confederations on the Management Committee and increased influence for the African Confederation.

“It was another important step forward. It’s in line with international best practice and will help reinforce our credibility within the international sports community and stakeholders,” said UCI President Brian Cookson, who will be contesting for a second term next year.

The Ethics Commission was also reconstituted, with three of the five members, including the president, being independent from the world of cycling.

“The commission will rely on the independent members. It has been done to ensure transparency and fundamental values of the sport upheld,” said Ethics Commission chief Bernard Foucher.

The congress also voted through changes to the process of electing officials to ensure elections are carried out in a transparent manner.
