Saif leads Qatar’s charge at Asian Snooker C’ship

AHMED Saif leads Qatar’s charge at the 33rd Asian Snooker Championship, under way at the Qatar Billiard and Snooker Federation Hall.

Qatar will also field Bashar Hussain, Mohsen Buksheisha, Abdulmuhsen Khamis, Ali Al Obaidli and Muhana Al Obaidli in the Asian confederation of Billiard Sport (ACBS)-sanctioned event, which will conclude on Friday.

Most Qatari players had competed in the World Championship held in Doha in November and will be looking to put that experience to good use.

Thailand’s Kritsanut Lertsattayathron is the defending champion of the tournament, where 64 players from 24 countries are vying for top honours.

The players were initially split into 16 round-robin groups. The top two from each will progress to the knockout stage of 32 which will begin on Wednesday.

The winner is guaranteed a two-year professional Tour card from the International Billiards and Snooker Federation and obviously the stakes are high.

India’s Pankaj Advani, China’s Lyu Haotian, Bahrain’s Habib Subah and Thai duo of Thanawat Tirapongpaiboon and Issara Kachiawong are some of the other big names in the fray.

The ACBS General Assembly will be held on the tournament’s sidelines.
