QSL : Week 3 | SHORT TAKES

EL JAISH 1 AL KHOR 0

Brazilian forward Romarinho converted from the spot in the 25th minute as Jaish registered their third successive victory. Khor’s diminutive attacking midfielder Madson had seen his stunning long-ranger crash into the crossbar in the 15th minute and they eventually paid price for the missed opportunity.

UMM SALAL 2 AL SHAHANIYA 2

Promoted side Al Shahaniya increased their tally to four points by holding Umm Salal. Mohammed Tiaiba gave Shahaniya a surprise lead in the 16th minute while Thaer Bawab equalised in the 48th. Qatari midfielder Mohammed Sayyar drilled in a screamer in the 69th to restore Shahaniya’s lead while substitute Abdulaziz Al Yahri slid in a Mohammed El Sayed cross in the 78th to ensure the men in orange stayed unbeaten.

AL KHARAITIYAT 1 AL ARABI 2

Title hopefuls Al Arabi defeated Al Kharaitiyat. Captain Boualem Khoukhi headed home to put Arabi in front in the fifth minute while Ahmed Saleh Khalfan made it 2-0 in the 31st. Jarallah Al Marri reduced the deficit three minutes from time.

AL AHLI 1 AL WAKRAH 1

Wakrah opened their account by holding Ahli. Moroccan playmaker Mouhcine Moutouali put Wakrah ahead in the 69th while Congolese striker Firmin Mubele equalised a minute later.

AL SAILIYA 1 AL RAYYAN 1

Michael Laudrup’s debut as Rayyan coach did not go on a desired note as 10-man Sailiya, long known as the Lions’ bogey team, held the defending champions. Romanian defender Dragos Gregore drilled home a 30-yarder to give Sailiya the lead in the fifth while Rayyan equalised through South Korean international midfielder Koh Myong-Jin in the 49th. Sailiya lost inspiring midfielder Faouzi Ayesh to a red card in the 80th, but Rayyan failed to capitalise on that.

MUAITHER 1 AL GHARAFA 2

Seven-time champions Gharafa, who had lost both their previous matches and let in nine goals, arrested the slump by defeating Muaither. The promoted side held a superior Gharafa goalless until the 70th when Vladimir Weiss broke the deadlock. Former Qatar international Mohammed Razzaq made it 2-0 before Mahmoud Zatara scored a consolation goal in injury time.

LEKHWIYA 3 AL SADD 3

Al Sadd’s Algerian striker Baghdad Bounedjgah scored late into the second session against Lekhwiya as the two former champions played out a draw. Baghdad had put Sadd ahead in the 18th minute while Youssef El Arabi equalised in the 23rd. Yousef Msakni headed a Nam Tae-Hee cross in the 40th to give Lekhwiya a 2-1 lead at half-time. Msakni conceded a penalty for fouling Ibrahim Majed inside the box and Hassan Al Haidous converted it in the 70th to make it 2-2. Nam swirled in a free-kick to restore Lekhwiya’s one-goal lead while Baghdad was not to be denied a second time in the 83rd.
