QBSF relishing Worlds challenge
A RECORD number of 238 players from 58 countries are competing in the World Snooker Championships, being hosted by the Qatar Billiards and Snooker Federation (QBSF), in men’s, women’s and masters’ categories.
This is the second World Championship the QBSF is hosting in three months, after the 9-Ball Pool event in August.
“Hosting two World Championships in three months was a big challenge, but we relished it,” said QBSF President Mohammed Mubarak Al Ramzani.
It is also the first time a GCC country is organising the Snooker Worlds. Matches are being played at 20 tables simultaneously at the Al Sadd Indoor Hall, which can accommodate up to 1,000 spectators. Six practice tables are set up at the QBSF’s main facility at Al Mumtaza.
“We’ve put everything in place to ensure a smooth tournament. We believe the participants will leave Qatar with fond memories,” said Al Ramzani.
A prize money of $16,000 is up for grabs for the men’s winner while the corresponding figures in the women’s and masters’ categories are $6,000 and $8,000 respectively.
The player who gets the championship’s highest break in the men’s category will receive $500 while it is $200 for women and $300 for masters.
“We’re glad to welcome the snooker fraternity to Doha. We’re happy to host the event for the first time in the GCC and believe all players will have a wonderful time here,” added Al Ramzani.
