Qatari boys triumph

QATAR won the Under-15 team title of the Second GCC Championships at the glass courts of Khalifa International Squash Complex last week. They beat Kuwait 2-1 in the final.

Competitions were held in the U-19 category as well.

Qatar did not win any medals in the U-15 individual event, but they had a creditable runner-up finish to cherish in the U-19 section as star player Hamad Al Amri went down fighting  9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 3-11 to Saudi Arabia’s Mishal Al Turki.

Only four GCC nations — Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain besides hosts Qatar — competed in the three-day event, with Oman and the UAE pulling out at the last minute due to lack of entries.

The Qatar Squash Federation (QSF) had previously hosted the GCC event in 2014.

“With experienced players Abdulla Al Tamimi and Syed Azlan Amjad graduating to senior class, the championships were a good test for local lads. We had conducted selection trials to pick the squad and they had prepared rigorously for the event,” said QSF Technical Secretary Gamal Rasmi.
