Zakarin wins Tour’s 17th stage

FINHAUT-EMOSSON: Russian Ilnur Zakarin of the Katusha team won the 17th stage of the Tour de France, a 184-km mountain trek from Bern to Finhaut-Emosson in Switzerland ahead of 15th stage winner Jarlinson Pantano of Colombia.

Briton Chris Froome (Team Sky) retained the overall leader’s yellow jersey.

Colombia’s Nairo Quintana was the big loser, struggling in the final 2km and giving up another 30sec to Froome, who pulled clear of all his main rivals except Australian Richie Porte.

But behind that, defending champion Froome followed an attack from Porte that none of his rivals could follow, with Quintana looking particularly vulnerable.
