Vingegaard recovering from concussion ahead of Tour de France bid

Two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard has revealed he suffered a prolonged concussion following his crash at Paris-Nice on March 13, which left him feeling dizzy, nauseous, and fatigued for several days.

Vingegaard, who is targeting a third Tour de France title this summer after victories in 2022 and 2023, has had to alter his preparation schedule. The injury forced his withdrawal from the Tour of Catalunya, where Visma-Lease a Bike teammate Simon Yates has taken over as team leader.

“After the crash, I was dizzy, and after the stage I got very nauseous and was incredibly tired, which continued for the next several days,” Vingegaard told Danish newspaper BT. “I’m happy to be back on the bike, even though it took a little longer than hoped because of my concussion, which has required a lot of rest.”

The 27-year-old Dane, known for his resilience, has already battled back from adversity in recent years. He placed second in the 2024 Tour de France despite suffering a life-threatening crash at the Tour of the Basque Country in April that left him hospitalised for 12 days. At the time, he admitted he had considered retiring from cycling.

Now, Vingegaard is taking a cautious approach to his recovery. “For now, we’ll take things day by day and let rehabilitation decide if we need to make any changes or additions to my programme,” he said.
