Vingegaard ready for Tour de France

Double Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard will chase a historic third title after recovering from a serious crash, his team Visma-Lease a Bike confirmed on Thursday.

The 27-year-old Dane suffered broken ribs, a collarbone, and a lung puncture in a mass crash at the Tour of the Basque Country in April. However, after a grueling recovery process, Vingegaard feels ready to compete in the upcoming Tour, starting June 29th in Florence, Italy.

“The last few months haven’t been easy,” Vingegaard admitted in a team statement. “But I’m thankful for the support of my family and team. We’ve worked hard to get here, and I’m excited to see how I stack up. I feel good and very motivated.”

Team director Merijn Zeeman acknowledged the challenges Vingegaard faces due to limited training. “[We’re] being cautious because he hasn’t raced,” Zeeman said. “His preparation hasn’t been ideal, but he’ll be there, healthy and motivated.”

Vingegaard won’t be alone. He’ll be joined by teammate Wout van Aert, also recovering from a collarbone injury sustained in March. “Our main goal is to support Jonas in the general classification,” said van Aert. “I want to contribute with an excellent team effort.”

The team also boasts Vuelta a España champion Sepp Kuss, Paris-Nice winner Matteo Jorgenson, and experienced riders Jan Tratnik and Wilco Kelderman.

Vingegaard’s biggest rival will likely be Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia, who has secured the top two spots alongside Vingegaard for the past three years.
