Tour of Algarve Stage Ends in Chaos After Riders Take Wrong Route

LISBON: The opening stage of the Tour of Algarve descended into confusion on Wednesday when a significant mix-up saw most of the peloton take the wrong route just before the finish line. Race organisers later decided to cancel the results due to the blunder.
As the riders approached a roundabout just before the home straight, the lead car mistakenly went down the wrong side of the barriers, with a majority of the riders following. This caused a bewildering sight for the spectators, who watched as two separate races unfolded on the final stretch.
The mistake gave Italy’s Filippo Ganna an unexpected advantage, and the Ineos Grenadiers rider celebrated prematurely as he crossed the line, raising his arms in triumph well before finishing the race. However, his celebration was short-lived, as race officials quickly called off the results, leaving the podium in Lagos empty and the 192.2km ride from Portimao meaningless.
Race organisers explained the situation in a statement, saying: “On the approach to the finish line in Lagos, the peloton became divided and a large number of the riders took the wrong route, followed the detour of the support cars, and missed the finish line.”
As a result, there will be no winner for this stage, and the riders will look ahead to the remaining stages of the race with the unfortunate mix-up behind them.
